Dangriga, on the south-eastern coast. Orin, whose parents are not together, stays at his mother\u0092s home at night-time and with his father, Marshall Mejia, during the day. His father\u0092s house is two minutes away by bicycle, and both homes are located just a few hundred metres from the sea. Mr. Mejia, who is a preschool teacher, understands the importance of exposing children to learning materials and a stimulating environment from a young age. \u0093We must prepare children for school long before they arrive in the classroom, only then are they able to benefit fully from the teachings,\u0094 he says. Orin, who graduated from the Kids First Child Development Centre preschool and begins primary school in September, has a wide-ranging vocabulary. He loves to read, or be read to by his father at bedtime. Mr. Mejia\u0092s activities with his son also include trips to the seaside \u0096 to swim at the beach and to see what fishermen at the pier have caught \u0096 and to the park to play.\r\n\r\nIn recent years, considerable progress was made in the area of Early Childhood Development. In 2011 only 32 per cent of children between 36 and 59 months of age attended an Early Childhood Education (ECE) programme, but this reached 55 per cent by 2015. Disparities however persist as only one in five of the poorest children attend ECE, and the Cayo district sees the lowest ECE attendance rate (36 per cent).  Further success is contingent upon removing barriers to supply of services, such as sufficient number of qualified professionals and greater integration of the different ECD components.
