Elaine Urbina, UNICEF WASH Officer in Zulia, talks with people during the installation of a 45 m3 tank, which will provide access to drinking water to more than 1.800 people in Hato Cardón community, Maracaibo municipality, Zulia on September 28, 2020.
Since the inception of the COVID-19 outbreak in March, WASH’s programme has been focused on supporting national and local efforts to prevent further spread of the virus at community level and in health care facilities; increasing access to safe water and sanitation distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and hygiene and cleaning products; enabling protective behaviors; and, building infection prevention and control (IPC) capacities in communities and institutions. Furthermore, UNICEF has been reinforcing the provision of safe water to communities and key institutions, including hospitals, primary health care centres and temporary shelters. More than 1.7 million have been reached through basic WASH (safe water and sanitation) services at the community level.
